MSU honors Saunders for science communication

In her communication and outreach, Alyssa Saunders, a graduate student in Integrative Biology's Gallant Lab and EEB member, has been awarded the Graduate Student Award for Science Communication and Outreach, conferred in recognition of the exemplary translation and communication of scholarly ideas, research findings, and advancements in all academic disciplines to the general public by a graduate or graduate professional student.
Saunders, the award noted, seeks to make science content accessible and enjoyable. She has created programs that target nontraditional audiences including cat lovers, bar/pub patrons, anime fans, and the online crochet community.
She partnered with the Constellation Cat Cafe to host an event called “The Science of Cattitude: Exploring Animal Behavior with Cats!” She helped organize Biology on Tap, bringing MSU researchers to a local pub once a month to give fun, nontechnical talks. She has presented at conventions about how science is portrayed in anime and video games. Saunders also develops and shares science-themed crochet patterns.
She will receive a plaque to memorialize the accomplishment and a $750 stipend. The recipient will be formally recognized at the annual Michigan State University Outreach and Engagement Awards Ceremony.
This award program is jointly sponsored by the office of the Vice Provost for University Outreach and Engagement and the MSU Graduate School.
